Sylmara ChatmanDr. Chatman has been Board Certified in Family Medicine for over 25 years. She received her medical degree from Michigan State University and currently practices in Southfield, Michigan. She joined Ascension Health as a Medical Director and developedand implemented their first School-Based Health Center Program which opened in September of 1995. Dr. Chatman and her staff touched the lives of over 10,000 students, reduced absenteeism and emergency room visits and enhanced the overall wellness of the students that participated in their programs. She wrote the 'Ask The Doctor Column" for the Michigan Chronicle Newspaper for over nine years, She was given the National Congressional Leadership Award in Washington DC in 2003, Detroit Urban League Community Service Award in 1998, The Michigan State Senate Physician of the Year Award in 1997, Leading Physicians of the World 2018, Trademark Women of Distinction Honors Edition 2018, Healthcare Innovation Award for my Body and Wellness Program at the Harvard Business Club of Boston 2018, Physician of the Year for 2021, 2022, Top Doctors in Michigan in 2020 and 2022 and is listed in the Library of Congress. She also made numerous television appearances as a medical expert for Channels WXYZ and WDIV, in which she discussed current health topics and relevant preventative health and wellness recommendations. Dr. Chatman has been managing chronic diseases in adults such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sexual dysfunction, obesity, thyroid disease, arthritis, and many other conditions for over 25 years. In 2015, she opened The Center for Functional Health and Wellness and launched the "Body and Wellness Program", which incorporated Functional Medicine into her practice. Her desire to include this program was due to the increasing number of prescription medicines taken by her patients, concern for side effects, a need for disease prevention, and health education.
