About the Book

Félix Varela y Morales (teólogo, sacerdote, investigador cubano). Hijo de un militar español. A los seis años vivió con su familia en La Florida. Allí cursó la primera enseñanza. En 1801 regresó a La Habana y entró en el Seminario de San Carlos y San Ambrosio. En 1806 obtuvo el título de Bachiller en Teología y tomó los hábitos. En 1810 se graduó de Licenciado en Teología y en 1811 hizo oposición a la cátedra de Latinidad y Retórica y a la de Filosofía en el Seminario de San Carlos. También en 1811 se ordenó de sacerdote. En 1817 fue admitido como socio de número en la Real Sociedad Económica, que más tarde le confirió el título de Socio de Mérito. Por estos años aparecieron sus discursos en Diario del Gobierno, El Observador Habanero y Memorias de la Real Sociedad Económica de La Habana. Cuando en 1820, a raíz del establecimiento en España de la constitución de 1812, fue agregada la cátedra de Constitución al Seminario de San Carlos, la obtuvo por oposición mas solo pudo desempeñarla durante tres meses en 1821, porque fue elegido diputado a las Cortes de 1822. El 22 de diciembre del mismo año presentó en éstas una proposición pidiendo un gobierno económico y político para las provincias de ultramar. También presentó un proyecto pidiendo el reconocimiento de la independencia de Hispanoamérica y escribió una Memoria que demuestra la necesidad de extinguir la esclavitud de los negros en la Isla de Cuba, que no llegó a presentar a las Cortes. Votó por la regencia en 1823, y poco después fue condenado a muerte. El 17 de diciembre de ese año llegó a Estados Unidos. Vivió en Filadelfia y después en Nueva York, donde publicó el periódico independentista El Habanero y redactó, junto a José Antonio Saco, El Mensajero Semanal. En 1837 fue nombrado vicario general de Nueva York y en unión de Charles C. Pise editó la revista mensual The catholic expositor and literary magazine (1841-1843). Murió en los Estados Unidos.
