Sie lenken ihren Blick wieder auf die Wahrnehmung der Wirklichkeit und setzen sich mit dieser künstlerisch auseinander. Nur ein paar Jahre später zeigt sich diese Entwicklung auch in Amerika. Es bildet sich eine völlig neue Kunstrichtung heraus, die sich konsequent von den Abstrakten Expressionisten, die damals den Kunstmarkt dominieren, abgrenzt. Mit der Vorstellung von einem autonomen Bild, lehnen die Vertreter des abstrakten Expressionismus, jegliche Gegenständlichkeit und Bezüge zur Wirklichkeit ab. Hauptvertreter wie Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko oder Barnett Newman, in der Tradition der europäischen Expressionisten stehend, thematisieren Emotionen, Gefühle, das Innere, aber auf keinen Fall wirtschaftliche oder gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen. Mit Beginn der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts fand in Amerika ein klarer Umschwung statt, der viele gesellschaftliche Aspekte veränderte. Unter Präsident Dwight D. Eisenhower entstand eine Konsumgesellschaft, die durch den wirtschaftlichen Boom der USA nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg einen damals unvergleichlichen Wohlstand erlebte. "America was the most powerful and also richest country in the world, and everyone knew it. The depression and the war were over."
