About the Author: Remigio Zena (pseudonimo di Gaspare Invrea) nacque a Torino nel 1850 e morì a Genova nel 1917. Di famiglia aristocratica, ebbe una educazione tradizionalista e religiosa. Dopo un soggiorno a Parigi, nel 1867 si arruolò negli Zuavi pontifici per difendere la città vaticana. Dopo la Breccia di Porta Pia, continuò gli studi in giurisprudenza, laureandosi nel 1873, e fece carriera nella magistratura militare. Ha scritto racconti (la raccolta "Le anime semplici" è del 1889) e componimenti poetici di intonazione religiosa e moraleggiante, ma con tratti anche ironici e vivaci, di gusto scapigliato (tra questi, "Poesie grigie" del 1880, "Le Pellegrine" del 1894 e "Olympia" del 1905). Nel suo primo romanzo, "La bocca del lupo" (1892), segue la narrazione impersonale e lo stile di Verga ma la storia supera i confini del Verismo, per la straordinaria capacità stilistica dello scrittore e la sua forza poetica, che si tramuta in una scrittura piena di umanità e di ironia attraverso la quale vede i protagonisti e la varia popolazione dei vicoli portuali. Eugenio Montale ha scritto: Nessuno capì così bene i poveri, i diseredati, come lo Zena; nessuno li lasciò ragionare con tanta indulgenza, con tanta pietà superiore e nascostamente sorridente. Diverso è l'altro romanzo, "L'apostolo", del 1901. Ambientato nella Roma di Leone XIII, narra, con uno psicologismo chiuso e morboso, la storia fogazzariana di un giovane aristocratico, il cui cattolicesimo inquieto si scontra con i dogmi delle gerarchie ecclesiastiche. Malato agli occhi, trascorse gli ultimi anni della vita appartato e lontano dalla società letteraria.
