About the Book

English summary: Volume III of the catalogs of manuscripts in the Leipzig University Library includes the first description of the Indian and Tibetan manuscripts acquired by the university more than 100 years ago to comply with modern scientific and library standards. In addition it recounts the history of the document's acquisition. While some manuscripts came from the estates of well-known scholars such as the Indologist Albert Grunwedel, the missionary and expert on South Indian Kannada literature Ferdinand Kittel and the Tibetologist August Hermann Francke, others were purchased directly from the Indian vendor Bhagavandas Kevaldas. This comprehensive and multi-faceted collection contains 119 texts from the Jain scriptures - canonical and non-canonical - in particular covering the fields of dogmatics, ethics, philosophy and narrative literature. It represents the second largest collection of Jain manuscripts in Germany. The Leipzig University Library collection also contains texts that do not belong to the Jain tradition, covering themes such as Bhakti, fictional and narrative literature, lexicography, medicine, philosophy and Jyotia. These texts are partly written in modern Indian languages such as Bengali, Braj, Gujarati and Hindi.
