Quest'opera nasce dalla intuizione di comprendere il Sud dell'Italia e la cultura del suo popolo alla luce del concetto di indolenza, tipico della controra estiva che rappresenta il cuore intimo e la atmosfera subliminale di un popolo lento, refrattario alla integrazione con culture differenti, le cui virtù ed i cui vizi nascono appunto da questo fatalismo legato alla terra ed ai suoi ritmi lenti. Il Sud descritto in quest'opera è un luogo dell'anima isolato dalla Storia e dalla geografia, un luogo di passaggio degli eventi, che dagli eventi rimane immune nella propria essenza. In questo contesto, a metà strada tra realtà ed immaginazione, si sviluppa la storia di Francesco Morea, un antieroe moderno, le cui abitudini di vita sono perfettamente radicate nel suo territorio di origine, la remota provincia del Sud, e la tradizione di una antica nobiltà terriera, inutile e indolente, ma romantica e profonda nelle proprie analisi della vita e del mondo. Francesco Morea è un uomo indispensabile nella propria inutilità, perchè ci riconduce al ritmo lento della nostra essenza, totalmente immune dal dinamismo della vita moderna, anche se nel corso della narrazione si assiste ad un coinvolgimento di questo signorotto di paese, che nel tempo libero legge Kant, nelle dinamiche del mondo del lavoro. Se quindi all'inizio dell'opera, Francesco è una monade perfetta ed armonica, perfettamente centrato nel tempo e nella tradizione, con l'inizio della professione forense viene trascinato nelle contraddizioni del Sud, tra mafia e società civile, accetta il benessere materiale in luogo della originaria armonia spirituale, e trova il proprio riscatto dalle vacuità del presente attraverso l'ingresso in massoneria, via esoterica questa dove conoscerà Carla dando vita alle premesse del futuro. Questa che avete tra le mani è una storia antica e moderna al tempo stesso, la storia di un popolo raccontata attraverso la vita di un uomo che è sintesi di tutte le virtù e le miserie del più autentico uomo del Sud, un Sud che non può essere compreso nell'ottica del capitalismo globalizzato, ma che deve essere amato per quello che è un luogo brullo e selvaggio nella propria essenza, crudele ed ingiusto, aspro e tragico, ma incommensurabilmente romantico per chi sia capace di coglierne la sua struggente bellezza.
