Les deux generations qui suivent la publication du De revolutionibus de Copernic ont longtemps passee pour calmes, voire denuees d'inventivite. Il n'en est rien. Autour de l'annee 1588, paraissent simultanement les travaux de Tycho Brahe, Roeslin, Ursus, Rothmann etc. Or tous ces astronomes se retrouvent dans la decennie suivante meles a une violente querelle sur le systeme geo-heliocentrique, sorte de compromis destine a valider les acquis coperniciens sans avoir a accepter ses nouveautes revolutionnaires en physique ou dans le domaine de l'interpretation de l'Ecriture. Qui est l'inventeur exact de ce nouveau systeme ? Ou et quand cela a-t-il eu lieu ? quelles sont les moyens de prouver les pretentions des divers intervenants au debat ? Telles sont quelques unes des questions abordees dans les textes, souvent passionnes, issus de cette crise. Nous publions, dans un premier volume, une serie de travaux consacres a la notion de priorite et de nouveaute en matiere d'astronomie au XVIe s., ainsi qu'une courte narration des origines de la querelle, en nous appuyant sur un riche ensemble de documents tous traduits in-extenso (en general pour la premiere fois). Le second volume donne une nouvelle edition du texte peut-etre le plus important issu de cette crise: le Contra Ursum de Kepler (ca. 1600-1601). Kepler, mele malgre lui a cette querelle (il ne croit pas au systeme geo-heliocentrique), est oblige par son employeur, Tycho Brahe, de composer un ouvrage pour defendre, du point de vue scientifique, les pretentions de Brahe. Il s'en tire avec honneur et compose un ouvrage ou, en particulier, il fonde l'histoire de l'astronomie. L'ouvrage est demeure inedit a la suite de la mort de Brahe en 1601. Nous donnons une edition entierement neuve de ce texte, accompagnee d'une serie de chapitres qui en montrent l'interet encore actuel, une traduction francaise et un large ensemble de notes. Dans un volume subsequent, nous donnerons une edition-traduction du De astronomicis hypothesibus (t. III), puis du De Opere Dei Creationis de Roeslin (t. IV), avant de conclure par un important choix de textes de Ch. Rothmann (t. V).
