Seule, l'étude judicieuse des littératures permet à l'investigateur le plus consciencieux de contrôler les impressions souvent plus vives qu'exactes de l'observation directe et d'envelopper dans une vue synthétique tous les traits dominants propres à caractériser et classer une famille humaine. Il est rare qu'en suivant cette méthode d'examen on ne découvre pas, sous la littérature, une philosophie qui résume en elle les dispositions innées et rudimentaires qu'un groupe d'hommes apporte avec lui en naissant à la lumière de l'histoire, et qui constituent précisément la race...
