Il professor Schmidt, psichiatra di fama mondiale, di ritorno a Francoforte dopo la partecipazione a un seminario a Lima, viene a conoscenza della morte di Rodolfo Bruno, un giovane docente di filosofia italiano che, in quella occasione, aveva chiesto il suo aiuto per risolvere un grave problema. Aiuto che Bruno non riceverà mai. Prima di venire assassinato, il giovane filosofo è riuscito a inviare a Schmidt un suo manoscritto accompagnato da una lettera in cui lo accusa di essere venuto meno alla parola data, e di non averlo aiutato a evitare la fine che sentiva ormai prossima. Dopo aver letto il manoscritto del Bruno, che narra, storia nella storia, dell'ultimo periodo della sua vita segnato da drammatiche vicende sentimentali e professionali, Schmidt, un po' per senso di colpa ma soprattutto per tutelare la propria reputazione, decide di andare alla ricerca dell'assassino. Nel corso delle sue indagini tra Lima e Milano, incontra i principali personaggi citati dal Bruno, le donne che ha amato, gli amici, i colleghi, la madre, e da ognuno di loro riceve risposte discordanti, tessere sparse di un puzzle di complessa composizione. Grazie anche all'aiuto della sagace e intuitiva assistente Danielle, lo psichiatra attraverso l'esame degli indizi e l'analisi psicologica degli attori, riuscirà a risolvere il caso.

Autore
Laureato in Economia e Scienze Politiche presso l'Università Cattolica di Milano e Filosofia presso la Statale, nella stessa città, Claudio Bietolini ha trascorso gran parte della sua attività professionale in America Latina, Spagna e Italia. Ha pubblicato in Perù, in Brasile e in Spagna numerosi saggi di geopolitica e economia collaborando con diversi quotidiani, fra i quali O Globo, O Jornal do Brasil, O Jornal do commercio e A Folha de São Paulo. Autore del libro La cosa ovvero colpo di stato a Ipanema edito in Italia e in Brasile. In diverse lingue è stata pubblicata la sua tesi di Scienze Politiche "L'ultima Utopia in Perù".
