Alla sera del 22 maggio 1873, Alessandro Manzoni, uno dei grandissimi della letteratura italiana, morì, in seguito alle conseguenze di una caduta sulle scale della chiesa dei gesuiti di San Fedele, a Milano, a pochi passi dalla sua abitazione. Ai funerali solenni, tenutisi in Duomo alla presenza delle più alte autorità dello Stato italiano, parteciparono migliaia di persone e la morte ebbe vasta eco sulla stampa nazionale ed estera, tale era la fama già in vita del poeta lombardo, anche fuori dei confini della penisola.

Tuttavia, il fascicolo della nostra rivista immediatamente successivo all'evento non riportò la notizia o quasi. Se ne trova solo un accenno - nove righe, 97 parole in tutto - in una Cronaca contemporanea, nella parte dedicata alle Cose italiane, che tratta delle morti illustri tra i protagonisti della rivoluzione. Nel medesimo articolo, per inciso, vengono concesse oltre 45 righe a Urbano Rattazzi. Il tono di queste poche parole su Manzoni è vagamente sarcastico, e comunque per nulla mesto e luttuoso. Era il tono che caratterizzava la polemica aperta da tempo dai gesuiti della Civiltà Cattolica contro i liberali. Come è possibile? E cosa c'entra Manzoni con la rivoluzione? Non è egli sempre stato considerato un campione del cattolicesimo e un esempio della moderazione borghese?

È anche sulla spinta di queste domande che abbiamo voluto dedicare il 24° volume delle nostre monografie ad Alessandro Manzoni. Vi abbiamo raccolto alcuni articoli dedicati, fino a oggi e sin quasi dalle origini, al gran lombardo, definizione coniata proprio su queste pagine. La bibliografia completa è ovviamente molto più copiosa, ma ci sembra di offrirvi in questo modo una testimonianza ragionata e ampiamente rappresentativa del lungo e articolato rapporto dei gesuiti della Civiltà Cattolica con l'autore del romanzo più studiato della letteratura italiana, I Promessi Sposi.
