Cristóbal Colon, le hizo creer a un nutrido grupo de poderosos Judíos conversos que uno de los propósitos de su viaje a las Indias, era el de localizar las 10 tribus perdidas de Israel y estos, ante la incertidumbre de la inminente expulsión de España y la consabida perdida de sus bienes, financiaron el primer viaje con la esperanza de encontrar un vecindario menos violento y más seguro. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra en su obra "los baños de Argel" inaugura formalmente la estafa conocida en nuestros días como la estafa Nigeriana. La victima recibe un correo electrónico de un alto funcionario de algún país conflictivo, donde se le anuncia que ha sido elegido para ayudar a sacar de este territorio una importante suma de dinero. A cambio de su colaboración será retribuido generosamente con varios millones de dólares. Una vez ganada la confianza le piden una determinada suma de dinero para desbloquear los fondos o con cualquier otra excusa y esto puede repetirse en varias oportunidades. El elegido recibe abundante documentación con sellos forjados de importantes bancos donde supuestamente reposa este dinero. Incluso de una cuenta ya abierta a su nombre en algún Banco Europeo. De cada 100 personas elegidas al azar, 20 contestan el correo electrónico y 10 envían dinero. En el año 2017 solo en Europa se estafaron con esta modalidad delictiva una suma superior a los 3000 millones de dólares.
