Le Rouge et le Noir, écrit par Stendhal en 1830, est un roman d'apprentissage qui explore les thèmes de l'ambition, de la société, et de la lutte des classes à travers le parcours de Julien Sorel. Ce jeune homme intelligent et ambitieux, issu d'une famille modeste de la province française, rêve de grandeur en s'inspirant de Napoléon. Il est confronté à la rigidité de la société de la Restauration, où les anciennes aristocraties reprennent le pouvoir. Le roman commence dans la petite ville de Verrières, où Julien, fils d'un charpentier, attire l'attention du maire, M. de Rênal, qui l'engage comme précepteur pour ses enfants. Bien que Julien méprise la bourgeoisie pour son hypocrisie, il séduit Mme de Rênal pour avancer ses ambitions, entamant ainsi une liaison risquée. Cet épisode marque le début de son ascension sociale mais aussi de ses conflits internes, tiraillé entre son désir de réussite et ses sentiments authentiques pour Mme de Rênal. Poursuivant ses ambitions, Julien quitte Verrières pour le séminaire de Besançon, espérant devenir prêtre, un autre moyen de s'élever dans la société. Cependant, il se heurte à l'hostilité de ses pairs et à l'autoritarisme de la hiérarchie ecclésiastique, qui décèle son ambition sous son apparente dévotion. Malgré son malaise, Julien impressionne ses supérieurs par son intelligence et sa discipline. Le roman, sous-titré Chronique du XIXe siècle, est une critique sociale acerbe qui dépeint Julien comme un personnage en proie à l'hubris, la démesure, et à la corruption par les mécanismes sociaux. Les seuls moments de plénitude qu'il éprouve surgissent lorsqu'il est seul dans la nature ou en prison. Le titre du roman, Le Rouge et le Noir, symbolise l'hésitation de Julien entre une carrière militaire (le rouge) et une carrière religieuse (le noir). Stendhal s'inspire d'un fait divers réel, l'affaire Berthet, pour construire une intrigue riche en tension et en psychologie. Le roman est une étude complexe de la psychologie humaine
