Tommaso Campanella, geboren 1568 in Stilo, war ein Philosoph, dessen philosophisch veranlagter Geist sich schon in jungen Jahren manifestierte, trotz der Bemühungen seines Vaters, ihn zum Juristen zu machen. Sein Werk "Philosophia Sensibus Demonstrata" führte zu einer Anklage der Häresie. Campanella verließ das Kloster, in dem er studierte, und reiste durch Italien, wo er mehrere berühmte Persönlichkeiten der damaligen Zeit kennenlernte. Er kehrte nach Stilo zurück, um die Gesellschaft zu reformieren und die herrschende Autorität zu schwächen, was ihn dazu veranlasste, sich gegen den spanischen Despotismus zu verschwören. Er wurde 27 Jahre lang inhaftiert und nach seiner Freilassung weiteren Verfolgungen ausgesetzt, die ihn zur Flucht nach Frankreich zwangen, wo er 1639 starb.
"Die Stadt der Sonne" ist Campanellas bekanntestes Werk, vergleichbar mit Thomas Morus' "Utopia" und Platons "Republik". Das Buch beschreibt eine ideale Stadt, die auf einem Hügel liegt und in sieben Kreise unterteilt ist, die jeweils einen Planeten darstellen. Die Stadt wird von Hoh dem Metaphysiker regiert, der von drei Häuptlingen unterstützt wird: Potenz, Weisheit und Liebe.
Die soziale Organisation ist gemeinschaftlich, wobei alle Güter und Verantwortlichkeiten zu gleichen Teilen geteilt werden. Bildung und Wissenschaft werden hoch geschätzt und durch Gemälde und öffentliche Erklärungen vermittelt. Das Regierungssystem ist eine Mischung aus republikanischen und monarchischen Elementen, aber mit einer starken philosophischen und moralischen Neigung. Die Stadt ist so befestigt, dass ihre Eroberung fast unmöglich ist, und ihr zentraler Tempel ist ein Symbol des Wissens und der Spiritualität.
Campanella unterstreicht die Bedeutung der Gemeinschaft gegenüber dem Individualismus und argumentiert, dass das Privateigentum die Wurzel vieler sozialer Missstände ist. In der Stadt der Sonne überwindet die Liebe zur Heimat und zum Gemeinwohl die persönlichen Interessen, was zu einer harmonischen und gerechten Gesellschaft führt.
