Ein Mann folgt der Aufforderung und erwacht aus einem Traum, der ihm anfangs wie das echte Leben vorgekommen sein muss. Bis er bemerkte, dass er der einzige Mensch in New York City zu sein schien. Die Rede ist von David Aames, Protagonist des 2001 veröffentlichen Films VANILLA SKY, ein Remake von Alejandro Amenábars Film ABRE LOS OJOS aus dem Jahre 1997. Begleitet wird die Szene von einem Song der britischen Art-Rock-Band RADIOHEAD. Er trägt den Titel EVERYTHING IN ITS RIGHT PLACE und passt, auch wenn man dies erst retrospektiv erfährt, perfekt zur Handlung des Films. Nun ist es keine Seltenheit, dass die Songs, die Teil des Soundtracks eines Films sind, textlich oder auch musikalisch zu dem passen, was auf der Bildebene erzählt wird. Ganz im Gegenteil. Es ist in der Regel aktiv gewollt, Bild und Ton als dialektische Einheit zu inszenieren und markiert nicht für wenige die Besonderheit des Mediums "Film", dem es so gelingt verschiedene Modalitäten ineinander zu integrieren. Dies ist auch bei VANILLA SKY der Fall. Die positiv rezipierte Filmmusik von VANILLA SKY besteht ausschließlich aus Pop- oder Rocksongs, so genanntem "Pop-Scoring", und auch diese Songs tragen, was ebenfalls nicht gerade schockieren mag, ihren Teil zu Handlung bei, passen von ihrer Musikalität zum filmisch Gezeigtem, haben eine kommentierende Funktion, eine symbolische Wirkungskraft oder nehmen diegetisch am filmischen Geschehen teil. Was hingegen überrascht, ist, was sich zeigt, wenn man das, zum ersten im Film gezeigten Song gehörige Album KID A aufmerksam anhört. Der Eindruck, dass die jeweiligen Songs bzw. das Album in seiner Ganzheit auf fast beängstigende Weise die Handlung von VANILLA SKY um- bzw. beschreibt, erklärt oder begleiten zu scheint, drückt sich gerade zu auf.
