Maia, a very curious little girl asks Grandpa Fadidi:
- If I have a mommy and daddy, and mommy and daddy have a mommy and daddy, who are the mommy and daddy of daddy and the mommy and daddy of mommy?
- You mean, the parents of grandpa and grandma?
- That's right! Where are they?
- Well, it's a long story...
- Tell me, grandpa!
The rest of the story you need to know! It's exciting because, in addition to talking about immigration, genealogy, and culture, it's a true story! The story of a family that sacrificed everything, even what was most precious to them, to start their lives over.
In this book, we learn about family trees, family, firstborns and youngest children, sacrifices, deception, courage, forgiveness, and the importance of knowing the history of our ancestors. I believe that all the mommies and daddies, grandpas and grandmas who will read this book with their children will have good stories to share with their little and curious descendants.
Author's Note: This is the story of my paternal grandfather's parents, Farid Abraão, who were Syrian immigrants to Brazil in 1920. My great-grandparents restarted everything from scratch, even their names and surnames were changed because it wasn't just a change of country, but a complete transformation of identity and culture. This story moves me, and I want to tell it forever. My great-grandfather's new name was Abraão Elias, which became the family's surname, which is why I'm called Mariana Abraão.
