Walumiyo es un libro de cuentos inspirados en el diario vivir de la gente cotidiana que habita cualquier ciudad. El libro toma su nombre de uno de sus cuentos, que narra la historia de cuatro amigas que se conocen desde la infancia. Relata, de forma jocosa, los sueños e ideales de cuatro niñas que forman un "club" que contrasta con la realidad social de sus existencias. Este libro contiene cuentos para adultos, algunos de cruda realidad como lo son los cuentos Amigas por siempre, Adivina el secreto, 20 de julio de 1969 y El nuevo periodista, cuentos que denuncian la violencia normalizada que se acepta en la sociedad que vivimos. Algunos cuentos, podríamos decir, han sido influenciados por el realismo mágico, entre ellos: El resplandor de Uriel, Perro callejero y La página en blanco.

"Escribir es para mí la forma más completa de poder expresar todas aquellas inquietudes que quizás, no puedo hablar con todo el mundo. En cierto modo es como un desahogo personal que quizás otro puede leer e identificarse con la situación o con la emoción plasmada en un cuento. Cuando tenía 8 años, tomaba la hora de almuerzo de la escuela para esconderme en la biblioteca con unos tomos gigantes de libros de cuentos. Pasaba tiempo leyendo una y otra vez las mismas lecturas que volaban mi imaginación, transportándome embelesada a esos mundos de personajes ficticios. Con frecuencia, añadía características inventadas a los personajes. Quería pensar como ellos pensaban y de esa forma satisfacía mis propias inquietudes sobre la historia ", resume María Milagros lo que para ella es su proceso creativo. "Walumiyo es un homenaje a la amistad. Narro una historia de cuatro niñas que juegan a ser reinas y que sueñan con un ideal de felicidad muy diferente a su realidad social" concluye la autora.

Algunos cuentos destacados incluídos en el libro son Bajo riesgo, cuento finalista del X Certamen de Cuento Corto Oral de la Universidad de Sagrado Corazón en Santurce Puerto Rico y Los instrumentistas, tercer lugar del Primer Certamen de Microcuentos Isabelita Freire en Río Piedras, Puerto Rico.
