Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,3, Freie Universität Berlin (Institut für Deutsche und Niederländische Philologie), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Bei der vorliegenden Arbeit handelt es sich um eine Diskursanalyse, keine soziohistorische Betrachtung. Die Literatur und die in ihr behandelten Phänomene werden also als im Grundsatz eigenständig und nicht als bloße Spiegel realer Vorgänge in der Gesellschaft angesehen. Dennoch ist insbesondere die Verortung des Geschehens der hier ausgewählten Werke in Berlin - der Stadt to be Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts - nicht zufällig und schon gar nicht nebensächlich. Ähnlich wie es heute bei Gegenwartsromanen einen Unterschied macht, ob der junge Protagonist durch ein nächtliches Neukölln streift oder durch Castrop-Rauxel, so bestimmt der Ort auch bei Fontanes Werken den Grundton der Erzählung und die Lebenswelt der Figuren. Weil aber nicht allein durch die Nennung der Stadt eine lebendige Kulisse entsteht, muss Personal her - und zwar diejenigen, die unumgänglich sind und unvermeidbar zum Alltag in einer Großstadt gehören: Vermieter und ihre neugierigen Gattinnen, Hausmeister, Nachbarinnen, Dienstboten und Mägde. Theodor Fontanes Berliner Romane erzählen Geschichten aus dem wilhelminischen Berlin kurz vor der Jahrhundertwende. Die bei dieser Arbeit im Zentrum stehenden Werke "Irrungen, Wirrungen", "Stine" und "Mathilde Möhring" schildern Alltagsgeschichten: Eine Liebesbeziehung und ihr Ende, einen Todesfall und eine bürgerliche Karriere. "Es ist nichts Aufregendes, der Inhalt wäre schnell rekapituliert" (Tanzer 5), will man sagen. Aber "Fontanes Texte sind Kunstwerke, da sie neben einer leicht zugänglichen Oberfläche" (Tanzer 5) eben noch mehr bieten, was eine Betrachtung der Texte immer wieder lohnend erscheinen lässt. Fontane propagierte "die ungeschminkte Widergabe des wirklichen Lebens bis zu dem Punkt hin, wo das Hässliche beginnt, das [...] nicht in die Kunst gehört" (
