Constance HolmeEnglish author and dramatist Edith Constance Holme, sometimes known as Constance Holme, was born in Milnthorpe, Westmorland, in 1880. She was the eldest of fourteen children and lived the most of her life in Westmorland, a historic county that servedas the setting for several of her books. In her first two novels, Holme focuses on the complex interactions between landowners, tenant farmers, and land agents, a topic she was acquainted with from her family history. Holme's literary works mostly investigate class connections. Both Holme's father and her husband worked as land brokers. Holme has the distinction of being the only living author of the twentieth century to have all of her novels and book of short stories published in the Oxford World's Classics series. Despite these successes, Holme's image soon deteriorated after her passing. Constance Holme's work was criticized often even during her lifetime, with one reviewer noting that they were "still hunting for someone who has actually read Constance Holme's novels." Even though several of her works were reissued in the 1970s, her last novel, The Jasper Sea, has never been released. Her literary works, which provide a view into the intricate social systems of early twentieth-century England, especially in the rural regions of Westmorland, continue to carry on Holme's legacy.
