As a courtier to King George I, Chesterfield joined politics before rising to the position of member of the House of Commons and then the House of Lords. Chesterfield was active in humanitarian work and the advancement of academic interests in addition to his political career. He made a substantial contribution to the Foundling Hospital's foundation and helped Britain adopt the Gregorian calendar. Although renowned for his humor and brilliance, Samuel Johnson and Chesterfield had a tense relationship as a result of their differences on the release of Johnson's dictionary. Chesterfield increasingly left politics in his latter years as a result of his deteriorating health and worsening hearing loss.
