Edgar Rice BurroughsA prolific novelist from the United States, Edgar Rice Burroughs is most recognised for his work in the adventure, science fiction, and fantasy genres. He created the Pellucidar series, the Amtor series, and the Caspak trilogy in addition to being wel known for conceiving the characters Tarzan and John Carter. The fourth son of merchant and Civil War veteran Major George Tyler Burroughs and his wife Mary Evaline Burroughs, Burroughs was born in Chicago on September 1, 1875. Burroughs attended many regional schools for his education. He then went to the Michigan Military Academy after attending Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. In January 1900, he was hitched to Emma Hulbert, his boyhood sweetheart. After working for a wholesaler of pencil sharpeners for seven years on meagre pay, Burroughs started writing fiction in 1911. Burroughs trained as a pilot in the 1920s, bought a Security Airster S-1, and pushed his family to take flying lessons. In 1935, Burroughs married Florence Gilbert Dearholt, a former actress and ex-wife of his friend Ashton Dearholt, with whom he had co-founded Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises while shooting The New Adventures of Tarzan. Burroughs had divorced Emma in 1934. Burroughs returned to Encino, California, during the war, where he experienced several health issues until passing away from a heart attack on March 19, 1950, having completed over 80 novels.
