Emmylou Kotzé

Emmylou KotzéHi there! I'm Emmylou Kotzé, a.k.a. Amphipolitan, and welcome to my Smashwords profile!

First of all, let's get something out of the way. I am South African, born and raised in a town a few hundred miles from the southern tip of Africa. Yes,I am white. Like most of the white people who now inhabit countries like America and Australia, I am descended from colonists and I owe my very existence to the British Empire, even though I had never been to the UK until I was 27. I could talk about the colonial history of my country for many hours, but my ancestry is only relevant to explain who I am and why I choose to write the stories I do.

I like to write characters who struggle to define their identity. I like to write about two cultures clashing, about the small people who are lost in the machinations of a great empire. Most of all, I like to write about love-all types of love. I like to believe that the things we do matter, even when few people remember them. I like to reflect change and hope in my writing. And the fantasy genre is perfect for that-as a writer, you have total freedom to design a world that teaches the lessons you most want others to see. I have been a self-proclaimed fantasy nerd since at least the age of six, when I first watched Xena: Warrior Princess on television.

If all this, along with a good dose of medieval fantasy-style adventure and romance, sounds like your jam, then please don't hesitate to check out my first novel here on Smashwords, The Broken Knight. And please check out my other writing, previews of things I'm working on, and poetry at amphipolitan.com!
