Erasmus DarwinCharles Hodge (December 27, 1797 – June 19, 1878) was a Reformed Presbyterian theologian and Princeton Theological Seminary president from 1851 until 1878. He was a significant proponent of Princeton Theology, an orthodox Calvinist theological movemet that flourished in nineteenth-century America. He strongly defended the Bible's authority as God's Word. In the twentieth century, many of his opinions were shared by Fundamentalists and Evangelicals. Charles Hodge's father, Hugh Hodge, was the son of a Scotsman who emigrated from Northern Ireland in the early eighteenth century. Hugh graduated from Princeton College in 1773, and after serving as a military surgeon during the Revolutionary War, he went on to practice medicine in Philadelphia. He married well-bred Bostonian orphan Mary Blanchard in 1790. The first three sons of the Hodges died in the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 and another in 1795.
