Lyon Gardiner TylerLyon Gardiner Tyler Sr. (August 24, 1853 – February 12, 1935) was an educator, genealogist, and historian from the United States. He was the son of the ninth President of the United States, John Tyler. Tyler was the 17th president of the College of Wlliam and Mary, a supporter of historical scholarship and preservation, and a vocal opponent of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Tyler was born at his father's Sherwood Forest Plantation in Charles City County, the fourth son of President John Tyler and First Lady Julia Gardiner Tyler. Lyon was eight years old when the former president, a renowned slaveholder and separatist, died in January 1862.
