She was raised in New Haven, where her father was a professor at Yale University,after being born in Stratford, Connecticut. In New York City, Parmele started her writing career as an editor and writer for newspapers and magazines. Afterwards, she began producing historical works, among them A Short History of England, The Development of an Empire: A Historical Outline of Rome, and The Evolution of an Empire: A Quick Historical Sketch of France. Parmele's work was distinguished by its lucidity and accessibility to a broad readership. She tried to pique readers' interest in history who may not have been otherwise interested. Parmele supported women's rights to an education and the vote. She was active in several women's rights groups and served as president of the New York State Woman Suffrage Association.
