Max Arthur MacauliffeMichael MacAuliffe, often known as Max Arthur MacAuliffe, was a prominent British administrator, renowned scholar, and author who lived from 11 September 1838 to 15 March 1913. MacAuliffe is well-known for his English translation of the Sikh text Gur Granth Sahib and history. On September 10, 1841, MacAuliffe was born in Newcastle West, County Limerick, Ireland. He attended Newcastle School in Limerick and Springfield College in Springfield, Illinois. Between 1857 to 1863, he attended Queen's College Galway, where he was awarded junior scholarships in the Literary Division of the Arts Faculty in 1857-58, 1858-59, and 1859-60. In 1860, he received a B.A. with first-class honors in Modern Languages. For 1860-1, he received a senior scholarship in Ancient Classics, and for 1861-62, he received a senior scholarship in Modern Languages and History.
