Menno RatzkerBorn into the same expatriate German Jewish community in Amsterdam that was home to Anne Frank's family, Menno Ratzker survived the Holocaust thanks to his father's wise decision to take the family into hiding in the Dutch countryside once the Nazi dportations began in mid-1942. Arriving to the U.S. in 1947, nine-year-old Menno grew up in the German-Jewish "Yekkie" community of Washington Heights, New York. His path took him from the Catskills to the Army Reserve and then employment in the burgeoning metal commodity industry. Both as a globe-trotting steel trader with Philipps Brothers (Phibro) and later on his own, Menno achieved professional success on a worldwide scale. Throughout it all, Menno has devoted his life to observance of Jewish tradition, serving as a top lay leader at Modern Orthodox synagogues as well as a key supporter of Shaare Zedek, Jerusalem's largest hospital. Menno and his wife, Helen, have been the recipients of numerous awards and honors recognizing their commitment and philanthropic support. They are the parents of three sons, ten grandchildren, and (as of 2022) two great-grandchildren. Menno and Helen live in Bal Harbour, Florida. Read More Read Less
