Raden Adjeng KartiniRaden Adjeng Kartini, or Lady Raden Adjeng Kartini, was a Javanese noblewoman who was born in Majong, Java (Indonesia), on April 21, 1879, and died in Rembang Regency, Java, on September 17, 1904. Her writings helped her become a significant figure fr both Indonesian feminism and the country's independence movement. Kartini had the uncommon chance to attend a Dutch school, which exposed her to Western ideals and helped her become proficient in Dutch. Her father was a Javanese aristocrat who served as governor of the Japara Regency (an administrative district) under the Dutch colonial authority. Kartini, a former director of the Department of Education, Religion, and Industry, arranged for the publishing of her letters in 1911 under the title Door duisternis tot licht ("Through Darkness into Light'') after her death at the age of 25 from problems following the delivery of her first child.
