Robert ChalmersRobert Chalmers, 1st Baron Chalmers, GCB, PC (Ire) was a British government servant and Pali and Buddhist scholar who died on November 17, 1938. Later in life, he was Master of Peterhouse, Cambridge. Chalmers was born in the Middlesex town of Stoke Nwington, the son of John Chalmers and Julia (née Mackay). He attended City of London School and Oriel College, Oxford, where he earned a BA in 1881. He finally rose to the position of Master of Peterhouse, Cambridge. He joined the Treasury in 1882 and served as the Treasury's Assistant Secretary from 1903 to 1907. Between 1907 and 1911, he was Chairman of the Board of Inland Revenue, and from 1911 to 1913, he was Permanent Secretary to the Treasury.
