Sherman William TWilliam T. Sherman (1820-1891) was a prominent American military leader who served as a Union general during the American Civil War. He is best known for his "March to the Sea," a devastating campaign that helped bring about the defeat of the Confedeacy. Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio, in 1820. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1840. He served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War and later resigned his commission to pursue a career in business. He worked as a banker in San Francisco before the outbreak of the Civil War. After the war, Sherman continued to serve in the Army and was promoted to the rank of General. He also served as the Commanding General of the Army from 1869 to 1883. Sherman died in 1891 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. Today, Sherman is remembered as one of the most important military leaders of the Civil War. His aggressive tactics and strategic vision helped turn the tide of the conflict in favor of the Union.
