Wolfram EberhardWolfram Eberhard (March 17, 1909 – August 15, 1989) were a University of California, Berkeley sociology professor who was specialized in Western, Central, and Eastern Asian societies. He was born in Potsdam, German Empire, into a family of astrophysiists and astronomers. He taught a wide range of courses, concentrating in Western, Central, and Eastern Asian societies and popular cultures. He was particularly interested in Chinese folklore, popular literature, Turkish history, minorities and local cultures in China, and Chinese-Central Asian connections. In 1927, Eberhard enrolled at Berlin University, where he studied classical Chinese and social anthropology. Because Berlin University did not provide teaching in colloquial Chinese, Eberhard enrolled privately and concurrently at the Seminar for Oriental Languages.
