Eine schicksalshafte Liebesgeschichte, erzahlt in großtenteils nie veroffentlichten Briefen. Zugleich ein Zeugnis vom Arbeiten und Leben des großen Malers, punktlich zu seinem 150. Geburtstag. Im Juli 1905 treffen Lyonel Feininger und Julia Berg im Zug Richtung Ostsee jeweils die Liebe ihres Lebens. Beide sind verheiratet, doch schnell ist ihnen klar, dass sie einen gemeinsamen Neuanfang wagen wollen. Bestarkt durch Julia, will Feininger zu einer neuen Malkunst finden. Davon schreibt er ihr in zahlreichen Briefen. Neben einem feinsinnigen Menschen, fortschrittlichen Vater, liebenden Ehemann und zweifelnden Kunstler scheint darin auch die Frau und Kunstlerin Julia Berg, seit 1907 Feininger, auf, die ihre Briefe fur die Nachwelt sperren ließ. Die seinen nehmen uns mit auf eine Zeitreise durch Krieg, Weimarer Republik, Inflation und die Entstehung des Bauhauses. Sie erzahlen vom Aufstieg der Nationalsozialisten, der wachsenden Gefahr fur Julia und ihre judische Familie, von Diffamierung und Abschied.
