Voici donc le premier corpus complet, et qui couvre trente-cinq ans, des lettres de Paulhan a l'un de ses correspondants. Jean Paulhan " le Patron " ? Le " redoutable " Jean Paulhan ? Dire qu'il fut, entre 1925 et 1965 l'eminence grise de la N.R.F. et de la litterature, c'est au moins le reduire. Mais le mythe a la vie dure. Si Paulhan est en effet le plus efficace de ceux qui firent alors et faisaient faire la litterature - parfois la meilleure - au nom de quoi la faisait-il, et la faisait-il faire ? " Pas une idee qui ne passe par la politique, ecrivait-il. Bien heureux quand elle ne s'y arrete pas. " Voici un " bien heureux " qui nous arrete, car entre les lignes de ces lettres il faudra lire des contradictions qui agitent, s'agitent et ne se resolvent pas. L'Histoire les aura en partie resolues, malgre la N.R.F. et souvent contre celle-ci. Entre 1934 et 1940, entre 1945 et 1965, c'est-a-dire entre l'inflation, le rendement, le 6 fevrier 34, les luttes ouvrieres, la guerre d'Espagne, les fascismes francais, les autres, la Resistance et ses confusions, la collaboration et ses compromissions, d'une part; de l'autre la Liberation, le Comite national des ecrivains (C.N.E., ou Cene), puis la guerre d'Algerie. On lutte, on veut lutter. Selon quelles methodes ? Au nom de quelles valeurs ? La litterature se decouvre deja un en soi, qui voudrait bien se proteger de l'exterieur, mais sa mauvaise conscience se trouve de nombreux alibis: etre " de gauche ", etre " de droite ". Les clivages ne sont pourtant pas aussi simples. A preuve Jean Paulhan, qui flotte entre Blum, de Maistre, Maurras, Chesterton et Lao-Tseu, d'Aragon a Sartre en passant par Drieu, Fernandez, Celine, les Rose-Croix, Guenon, le Tao et le Zen. Son interlocuteur - ici provisoirement silencieux - croit, lui, qu'il y croit. Mais a quoi, au juste ? (La Raison est-elle toujours une bonne raison ?) Il croit au Pere, en tout cas, ce Jean Paulhan tout-puissant sur lui, ici partout present, et qu'il faudra tuer, a l'age d'homme. 226 lettres de Jean Paulhan, ou le triomphe des individualismes luttant pour le bien de tous... et la vanite des " artistes ".
