Gluckstadt feiert 2017 das 400jahrige Stadtjubilaum. Anlass genug, die Geschichte der Stadt in Schlaglichtern zu beleuchten, auch wenn Gluckstadt im Vergleich zu den mittelalterlichen Stadtgrundungen von Itzehoe, Krempe und Wilster nicht besonders alt ist. Aber die Stadt an der Elbe hat eine besondere Grundungs-, Funktions- und Baugeschichte. So wurde Gluckstadt als Planstadt mitten in die unbebauten Wildnisse gesetzt, weil der danische Konig Christian IV. (1577-1648) einen Hafen mit Zugang zur Nordsee benotigte, denn der konigliche Anteil der Herzogtumer Schleswig und Holstein besaß keinen fur Seeschiffe geeigneten Nordseehafen. Auch sollte Gluckstadt helfen, die Interessen gegen Hamburg zu wahren und es war gleichzeitig als gesicherter Elbubergang fur die Ambitionen Christians IV. im Niedersachsischen Kreis wie auch als Ruckzugspunkt im Falle militarischer Ruckschlage gedacht. Daher war die Stadt von einem modernen Festungsgurtel umgeben. Zugleich wurde mit der Anlage eines reprasentativen Wohn- und Regierungssitzes, namlich des Schlosses Glucksburg (1629-1631), auch fur die Prasenz des Monarchen selbst gesorgt. Im Schloss und am Schloss selbst wirkten bedeutende Kunstler, die der machtige danische Konig in seine Residenz holte. Leider uberdauerte diese ihren Bauherrn nur 60 Jahre. Als Rest der Anlage blieb der ehemalige Wirtschaftshof direkt am Hafen, auf dessen Gelande heute das Provianthaus steht.Als Toleranzstadt bot Gluckstadt vielen Glaubensfluchtlingen ab 1619 als religiose Freistatt eine neue Heimat. Der Judische Friedhof, der zu den bedeutendsten des Landes gehort, erinnert uns an diese Zeit. Zahlreiche Kunstler wirkten in Gluckstadt im Laufe der Jahrhunderte und es lohnt sich, sich mit ihnen zu beschaftigen. Mit dem Detlefsengymnasium verfugt die Stadt uber eine der altesten Schulen in Schleswig-Holstein und die Primanervereinigung mit den jahrlich erscheinenden Primanerberichten stellt in Deutschland eine Besonderheit dar. Gluckstadt ist mit seiner historischen Altstadt und der besonderen Stadtanlage, seinem Museum und den erhaltenen Adelspalais ein touristischer Hotspot in den holsteinischen Elbmarschen.
