About the Book

Before actual writing occurs, writers prepare. With these words, award-winning children's author David Harrison affirms the importance of teaching students the necessary steps of prewriting-from choosing a viable topic to conducting in-depth research to taking effective notes and organizing them. In this book David offers insights into his prewriting process, while educator Mary Jo Fresch translates his methods into engaging lessons that develop students' research skills to enhance their writing.
About the Author:

David L. Harrison's 92 books for young people and teachers have received dozens of honors. His works have been translated into numerous languages and anthologized more than 185 times. His poetry has inspired plays, been set to music, and sandblasted into a library sidewalk. He has been featured at hundreds of conferences, workshops, literature festivals, schools, and colleges across America. David holds two science degrees and two honorary doctorates of letters. He has received the Pioneer in Education Award and Missouri Library Association's Literacy Award. He is Drury University's poet laureate. David Harrison Elementary School in Springfield, MO, is named in his honor. David co-authored Partner Poems for Building Fluency with Timothy V. Rasinski (2009), Using the Power of Poetry with Kathy Holderith (2003), and Easy Poetry Lessons That Dazzle and Delight with Bernice Cullinan (1999), all published by Scholastic.

Mary Jo Fresch, Professor Emeritus in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University, writes and speaks about literacy-related topics. She holds a B.S. in elementary education, an M.S. in Reading Supervision/Specialist, and a Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Culture. Her teaching experiences include 3rd grade, adult literacy, and pre-service and in-service teachers. Her professional interests focus on child-centered spelling, phonics, reading, and writing instruction. She has authored 18 books for teachers, including Teaching and Assessing Spelling (2002) and The Spelling List and Word Study Resource Book (2004) for Scholastic. Her numerous journal articles offer the practical application of her literacy research.
