Der vorliegende Band umfasst Goethes Briefe aus den ersten vier Jahren nach seiner Ankunft in Weimar im Herbst 1775, wohin er zunächst nur als Besucher gekommen war. Im Sommer 1776 berief Herzog Carl August von Sachsen-Weimar und Eisenach den Frankfurter Dichter in das Geheime Consilium, die höchste Landesbehörde. Die damit beginnende amtliche Tätigkeit bestimmte bis Ende 1779 zunehmend Goethes Tagesablauf. Weimar wurde zu seinem Lebensmittelpunkt, gleichwohl aber unternahm er als herzoglicher Beamter wie auch als Privatperson immer wieder ausgedehnte Reisen vor allem durch das Herzogtum. Im Dezember 1777 brach er allein und inkognito in den Harz auf und bestieg den winterlichen Brocken, von September 1779 bis zum Januar 1780 reiste er mit dem Herzog in die Schweiz. Die 561 Briefe des vorliegenden Bandes zeugen gleichermaßen von Goethes Reiselust und den vielen Ortsveränderungen wie von seinem inneren Befinden, seiner anfänglichen Unsicherheit und wiederkehrenden Unruhe. Sie belegen aber auch die Ausweitung seiner Interessen und nicht zuletzt das Bemühen, sich neuen Herausforderungen zu stellen. Die überlieferten Briefe sind an 65 verschiedene Adressaten gerichtet. Nachgewiesen werden außerdem 274 erschlossene Briefe. Von allen Briefen, die Goethe von November 1775 bis Ende 1779 geschrieben hat, gelten nur wenige alten Freunden wie Lavater, Merck, Johanna Fahlmer, dem Ehepaar Kestner oder Augusta zu Stolberg. Dafür beginnen 1775/76 bedeutende Korrespondenzen, darunter die mit Herzog Carl August und vor allem mit Charlotte von Stein, an die Goethe in den folgenden 10 Jahren so häufig wie an keine andere Person geschrieben hat. Zwei Drittel aller im Band enthaltenen Briefe sind an sie gerichtet. In ihnen entfaltet sich Goethes wichtigste persönliche Beziehung des ersten Weimarer Jahrzehnts. Den neu beginnenden Briefwechseln, insbesondere dem mit Charlotte von Stein, sind umfassende einleitende Kommentare gewidmet, die eine Einordnung in Goethes Gesamtbriefwerk ermöglichen. Die Einzelstellenkommentare erhellen biographische, literarische, kultur- und zeitgeschichtliche Bezüge und Anspielungen, widmen sich den sprachlichen Besonderheiten und den vielfältigen Parallelen zwischen Dichtung und Brief, zwischen denen die Übergänge oft fließend sind. Nachgewiesen werden auch sämtliche Beilagen zu Goethes Briefen, darunter Zeichnungen, die dem Text als Faksimiles beigegeben sind. Der Kommentar wird ergänzt durch zahlreiche Dokumente wie z. B. die Briefe Herzog Carl Augusts an Jacob Friedrich von Fritsch aus der Zeit kurz vor Antritt und während der Schweizer Reise, die erstmals vollständig nach den Handschriften mitgeteilt werden. Die vorliegende Edition bietet die Briefe Goethes aus den ersten vier Weimarer Jahren in revidierter und damit im Vergleich zu den bisherigen Ausgaben in weitgehend neuer Chronologie.
