About the Book

"Abettendi a Garibaldi" è un dramma in lingua sarda cagliaritana. Si presta ad essere rappresentata per Carnevale, anche se in realtà è un dramma storico senza tempo. Questa è la trama. Nel 1849 un gruppo di studenti universitari si riuniscono a Cagliari, per festeggiare il Carnevale. Per paura della polizia piemontese che li tiene sotto controllo cercano di tenere la loro riunione segreta, senza peraltro riuscirci (infatti tra le tante maschere cagliaritane che si uniscono agli studenti, riusciranno ad infiltrarsi alcune spie della polizia piemontese). Per un disguido le maschere di Garibaldi e di Anita non sono presenti. Mentre un gruppo di maschere decide di aspettare l'arrivo di Garibaldi, un altro gruppo, quello formato dai nobili, guidati da Iroxi Cancioffali, decide di andarsene a far baldoria e lascia il Circolo al suono della rantantira (all'unica strofa tradizionale ne ho aggiunte altre due di mia invenzione) .
Mentre attendono l'arrivo della maschera dell'eroe dei due mondi e della sua compagna Anita, Su Majolu, una Maschera particolarmente intraprendente propone per la consueta rappresentazione del 15 Agosto, di allestire un copione dal titolo"S'Annu Doxi", dedicato alla Congiura di Palabanda, un tentativo fallito di ricacciare a mare i Piemontosi represso nel sangue, avvenuto nell'anno 1812 ad opera di alcuni Sardi rivoluzionari appartenenti ai Gremi, al mondo delle professioni e a qualche rappresentante controcorrente del clero. Durante le prove del dramma de "S'Annu Doxi" i tre sindaci dei rioni storici di Cagliari portano la notizia che Anita Garibaldi, quella vera, morta e che al vero Garibaldi e' stato impedito di sbarcare a Cagliari dai Piemontesi.
Questo scatena l'ira degli studenti, (anche se Garibaldi troverà ospitalità comunque a La Maddalena, ospite di una famiglia amica), tanto più che Luigi Cadeddu e Lucina, irromperanno in scena (4.a scena) per comunicare che Gialeto li ha denunciati al Marchese di Villamarina, che cerca ogni pretesto per mettere a tacere gli studenti.
Il pian o della finzione drammaturgica, si intersecherà così con la attualità del 1849, offrendo lo spunto alla maschere-attori di fare alcune riflessioni importanti sui loro progetti e sulle aspirazioni future della loro città e dell'infelice isola di Sardegna
Nel drammatico finale si confronteranno le due anime del dramma: quella legalitaria del Governatore Pes di Villamarina, un nobile fedele servitore del re piemontese, convinto che solo il rispetto delle leggi possa portare ai Sardi benessere e progresso, e quella rivoluzionaria di "Su Majolu" che aspira all'indipendenza della Sardegna, nell'illusione che possa portare ai Sardi una condizione di vita più umana e libertaria.
