About the Book

"Across the Brooklyn Bridge" is the true story of the author's quest to discover the journey taken by a fifteen-year-old boy who went to sea in the waning years of the age of sail and almost lived to see Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. That boy was the author's grandfather and that adventure would lead from Sweden to Egypt to Liverpool to Philadelphia and finally to Brooklyn, New York, where even the Brooklyn Bridge itself has a place in the family's lore; but this is only the beginning of the story. The author's finding of his father's diaries reveals a time capsule of life between 1941 and 1947 in Brooklyn and in the Pacific during World War II. Recorded within are the experiences of a young engineering student in Brooklyn, who along with his generation finds himself drawn into a world at war and toward a destiny he could not have imagined. The war story that unfolds reveals the unknown but critical contribution made by an elite Signal Corps company to the war effort in the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns. With the end of the war comes an East meets West love story of a soldier and the love of his life and their heart-wrenching struggle to overcome separation by an ocean, racially-biased immigration laws, and the high demand for limited post-war transportation. The author conducted exhaustive research to fill in details and place the elements of this story into historical context. The result is an open door through which the reader can step and experience life during one of the most dramatic and trying periods in 20th century history. This volume also contains more than 60 photographs integrated into the text.
