About the Author: Shimon Garber was born and raised in Leningrad, Russia, in the difficult days after World War II. He remembers a city filled with debris, where every resource was limited. He and his sister, mother, and grandfather shared a communal six-room apartment with twenty people and one toilet-and a couple of kerosene lamps for cooking.
Garber began his working life as a turner, making parts for tanks in a dilapidated factory. He found the labor monotonous and dreary, however. After exploring hairdressing and the theater, he found his true calling in the culinary arts.
After immigrating to the United States, Garber worked a series of jobs before opening his own restaurant. He is the author of the Immigrants series of novels.
