About the Book

There are many books on mental health, black mental health, and Black-feminine mental health. Few, if any, take you on an intimate journey through trauma, therapy, and ultimately, to healing. With the evolution of mental health and mental health issues in America, especially for people of color, my work seeks to answer many of the questions that people ask about trauma, folks with mental illness, as well as the healing process. This work is a starting point for the conversation about Black-feminine mental illness in the age of information. It's a conversation, itself, about living through trauma, being vulnerable, empowerment, and finding happiness despite one's past. The goal is to bring these conversations out from behind closed doors, out of the therapy room, and into the world.

The book is divided into 3 major parts: 1) Adversity, which takes the reader on an intimate journey through my own traumatic past. In essence, I relive them, as well as my emotions. It also journeys through the root of issues, like shame, insecurity, and teenage self-medication to name a few. 2) Therapy takes the reader through my journey toward getting help. This is something that many POC still struggle with, but it's the most important part. It highlights the stigma I faced, internal and external, which are key in the political and social movements of mental health support for POC. And 3) Ecstasy, which is my "road to enlightenment". It challenges the stigma of people with depression being "sad" or "emo" all the time. That we can be happy, that we can feel something other than constant emptiness. The breakdown of this stigma serves people with and without mental illness.

About the Author
Robin is a passionate, empathic military brat born in LaGuna Hills, CA. She grew up in Chicago where she used writing to cope with her early years of trauma. She discovered her love for story telling in the fifth grade with a comedy she wrote about a little girl and her best friend, who is a lactose-intolerant squirrel. Despite her diagnoses with depression, anxiety, and PTSD, Robin loves traveling the world, eating delicious food, and spending time with the people she loves.
