About the Book

There is often more truth in fiction... Corporal Drew Clemens has been sent to Kandahar Air Field with only one week's notice and little information on what his job will entail. His employers don't believe he has the need to know what function he'll be performing in a desert war zone. Once in Kandahar, he discovers the job has been fully automated. The secrecy surrounding both his trade and his employers has prevented anybody from realizing the superfluous nature of his position. Drew proceeds to live a life of leisure while witnessing the increasing hypocrisy and criminality of the West's impact on the Afghan people. Eventually, the weight of watching war crimes unfold forces him to a dilemma. Does he keep his mouth shut and remain comfortable behind the high security zones and bureaucracy protecting him, or does he try to stop his own task force from destroying innocent lives?
About the Author: Drew Clementino is a shit-disturbing novelist from Toronto. Whether doing his best to defy musical convention with his Hard Rock band Return For Refund, or standing in the face of Canada's immoral involvement in Afghanistan with his book Afghan Dust, Drew does what he believes in no matter the cost. Drew started writing "Afghan Dust" a couple weeks after his first tour of Afghanistan. "It became obvious to me in a very short period of time that our presence there was unnecessarily excessive and morally questionable." By the time he returned home six months later, he finished half of the first draft. He returned to realize he didn't have an ending to the book. "I had this feeling inside me that I had to return to get the whole story. My first tour taught me that we were the real enemies. My greatest victories were against my own Task Force and had little to do with fighting the Taliban." He returned to Kandahar after only eleven months home and found the ending he was looking for. "My second tour really beat me down. Any success I may have felt after my first tour was destroyed by my second. I got my ending, but I suffered for it." Disgusted with what his involvement in Canada's military culminated in, he prepared to leave the army upon completion of his contract. It was around this time that he was diagnosed with PTSD. "I had so much anger and I didn't understand why. I was literally pulling people out of their cars and beating them up on the side of the road during traffic. I would wake up screaming random codes in the middle of the night and not know why." Finally, after a violent encounter with his ex, he admitted himself for treatment. His license was revoked when he refused to take medication to treat his PTSD. "I wasn't going to let some apathetic, drug dealing, psychiatrist forever alter my brain chemistry because he was too lazy to help me work through my problems." On Aug 2 2012, he illegally drove his moving van back to Toronto from Ottawa when the army refused to assist him with his move. He spent the next two years writing and rewriting "Afghan Dust". "I put my heart and soul into my writing. I didn't want to rely on gimmicks to attract attention. I slaved over each line and combed over it relentlessly until I felt I got it right. I'm the same with my music. "It's been a long road to get here but I feel blessed."
