Au lendemain de la Premiere Guerre mondiale, face au profond traumatisme engendre par le conflit meurtrier en Occident et au desenchantement croissant produit par l'industrialisation de masse, l'interet et la curiosite pour l'Afrique redoublent d'intensite.
Alerte par la crise mondiale de 1929, le monde - developpe - entrevoit dans la cadence acceleree de l'exploitation des colonies une chance de relance de son economie malmenee. La serie des grandes expositions coloniales et internationales qui se succedent a partir de 1930 en est sans doute le reflet, qui permet en meme temps de mieux apprehender les ressources, les modes de vie et les populations des territoires conquis. Quelques explorations africaines d'envergure realisees au cours des annees 1920 - dont la fameuse Croisiere noire - Citroen - de 1924-25 est la manifestation la plus eclatante - s'inscrivent deja dans ce contexte.
Dans une dimension plus philosophique cette fois, les Europeens veulent en quelque sorte - laver - la culpabilite de leurs discordes internes et de leur decadence sociale en se retrempant dans le bain de jouvence et d'innocence que leur renvoie apparemment l'image des terres encore - vierges - - "- untained -," disaient les Anglo-saxons - du continent noir.
Sur un plan esthetique enfin, ce besoin profond de ressourcement au contact d'une culture radicalement differente mais qualifiee de - primitive - se fait sentir au meme moment dans les milieux artistiques lasses des raffinements et des fadeurs de l'Art nouveau. L'avenement de l'Art deco durant l'Entre-deux-guerres devient ainsi un avatar du primitivisme.
C'est essentiellement de ce courant que relevent la plupart des africanistes peintres et photographes (Auguste Mambour, Alexandre Iacovleff, Fernand Lantoine, Pierre de Vaucleroy, Allard l'Olivier, Marc Allegret, Casimir Zagourski, etc.) qui decouvrent a tour de role l'Afrique de leurs propres yeux au cours de cette periode. Moins connus que ceux des primitivistes radicaux comme Picasso ou certains expressionnistes qui leur sont contemporains, leurs noms et leurs oeuvres meritent d'etre redecouverts."
About the Author: Jean-Pierre De Rycke est docteur en Histoire de l'art de l'Universite de Louvain (Belgique). Apres un sejour de plusieurs annees en Grece, ou il enseigna notamment aux universites de Crete et de Thessalie, il revient en Belgique afin de prendre la direction de la renovation du Musee des Beaux-Arts de Tournai, dont il est le conservateur, et y assure le commissariat de l'exposition "L'Afrique revee" consacree aux africanistes."
