Vi er i Afrikas hjerte, på Congofloden - midt under Første Verdenskrig. Den besynderlige, engelske kvinde Rose Sayer og hendes bror Samuel, som er missionær, har viet deres liv til at afhjælpe nøden og ukristeligheden blandt de indfødte. Men andre farer end nød og underernæring truer. Søskendeparret befinder sig midt i junglen, da broderen pludselig dør - og Rose står midt i urskoven uden mulighed for at komme derfra. Jo, forresten - én mand kan hjælpe hende. Den bramfri og fordrukne eventyrer Charlie Allnutt er ikke et af Guds bedste børn. Lige pt. sejler han sprængstof til minerne i Belgisk Congo, og fragten foretager han ombord på sin gamle, næsten udtjente motorbåd "Afrikas dronning". Charlie må træde til for at hjælpe den unge Rose ud af junglen. Samtidig terroriserer et tysk krigsskib de afrikanske søer og truer den sårbare balance i kolonitidens Afrika. Nu kommer Rose på den overmodige idé, at hun vil sprænge det tyske krigsskib "Königen Louise" i luften ... For til hvad hjælp er sprængstof, hvis man ikke som en god englænderinde forsøger at vende krigslykken? Det noget umage par er hinandens diametrale modsætninger, og det er ikke ganske frivilligt, de tilbringer tid sammen. Men de må samarbejde mod ydre farer og fjender i et højere måls tjeneste, og til sidst vendes had til kærlighed. Afrikas dronning blev ubestridt C.S. Foresters kendteste værk. Cecil Scott Forester var et forfatterpseudonym for Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (1899-1966), britisk forfatter og læge. Forester var selv et produkt af kolonitidens britiske imperium - han blev født i Kairo i Egypten, hvor hans far var udstationeret som underviser, og boede i Egypten de første tre år af sit liv, hvorefter hans mor flyttede tilbage til England med sønnen. Romanen er fra 1935 og blev i 1951 omsat til det store lærred i en ikonografisk filmatisering af stjerneinstruktøren John Huston med det suveræne skuespillerpar Katharine Hepburn og Humphrey Bogart i de bærende hovedroller.
