About the Book

In the year 1986, the first HIV seropositive case in India, was discovered in Madras. Today, close to a decade later, over 786 clinically diagnosed AIDS cases have been reported and Ministry of Health estimates put the number of HIV infected persons in the country at 15 lakh. Some estimates suggest that by the year 2000, HIV would have infected about 5 million Indians and the number of AIDS cases would exceed one million. The situation is clearly daunting, especially in the absence of a vaccine or cure for AIDS. Obviously an AIDS pandemic can only be averted by a massive programme of public education. This AIDS handbook, authored by experienced medical professionals is designed to fulfill precisely this need. Aimed at grassroots AIDS workers and the layman, it lucidly and effectively deals with topics ranging from biology of the HIV virus, symptoms and transmission of AIDS to prevention, counselling services for HIV infected persons and an action plan for AIDS education.About the AuthorDr. John Hubley is a consultant in health education and honorary lecturer at Leeds University. He has been involved extensively in programmes for the prevention and control of AIDS and has acted as a consultant to the WHO Global Programme on AIDS and more recently to the AIDS Task Force of the European Community. He is a regular visitor to India where he has worked as a consultant to health and development programmes in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Tamil Nadu.Dr. Shankar Chowdhury, Associate Professor, teaches at the Centre for Community Medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
