Extrait Bernard Cébronne, fils d'un chirurgien qui avait eu ses heures de célébrité, et lui-même médecin éminent, traversait un soir de mai le jardin du Luxembourg. Absorbé dans une rêverie, il regardait distraitement les vieux arbres, témoins de tant de vieilles choses, les fleurs de printemps plantées à profusion dans les massifs, toutes les beautés nouvelles qui rajeunissaient les grandes allées. C'était un de ces soirs doux et paisibles, où les promesses de la terre refleurie excitent les bons espoirs, calment les pensées douloureuses, où le bien semble émaner de la nature entière, où rien ne fait prévoir le mal. Quelques promeneurs remarquaient la haute taille de M. Cébronne, son visage intelligent aux traits accentués, et peut-être se demandaient-ils quel était le sujet de sa méditation profonde. La réponse leur eût été donnée si, le voyant s'arrêter devant des jacinthes magnifiques, ils l'avaient entendu murmurer: Elle les aime... ces fleurs lui rappellent une époque heureuse de sa vie. Pauvre enfant! Il s'assit sur un banc et s'absorba dans ses pensées jusqu'au moment où il se sentit frappé sur l'épaule. -Ah! c'est toi enfin, Henri! Il y a une demi-heure que je t'attends, dit-il au nouveau venu en lui serrant la main. L'ami, qui venait de le rejoindre, contrastait avec lui de la façon la plus complète. De taille moyenne, élégante, il n'avait pas cette apparence de force qui frappait chez M. Cébronne. Avec son visage fin, terminé par une barbe en pointe, il ressemblait, moins l'expression d'astuce et de libertinage, aux portraits d'hommes peints à l'époque des Valois. De vieille famille parlementaire, avocat de talent, M. des Jonchères était lié depuis son enfance avec le docteur Cébronne. Jean de La Brète, pseudonyme d'Alice Cherbonnel, Alice Cherbonnel est née d'un père normand et d'une mère angevine. Lucie Félix-Faure-Goyau écrit à son sujet: Jean de La Brète est de la race des fines conteuses de France, et notre pays peut se glorifier d'en avoir toute une lignée: les unes glorieuses; comme les Sévigné, les La Fayette, les Caylus, pour ne parler que du grand siècle; les autres, plus modestes, plus effacées, inconnues ou presque, mais retenant cette alacrité d'esprit, qui leur est comme un trait de famille. En France, deux rues portent le nom de Jean de La Brète: à Saumur et à Cizay-la-Madeleine.
