À la recherche d'une méthode pour parler scientifiquement du sens, Algirdas J. Greimas a conçu au fils des ans une sémiotique avec un appareil terminologique remarquable. Mais celle-ci se révèle cependant difficile d'accès de par son jargon qui peut sembler rebutant. Au lieu de mettre en avant la terminologie, cet ouvrage met l'accent sur la pensée de Greimas. Elle s'est forgée au travers de son oeuvre et elle garantit la cohérence et la bonne utilisation des concepts de sa méthode. L'ouvrage expose sa sémiotique en quatre volets décisifs. Dans le premier, Greimas se débarrasse de la surface du signifiant pour s'aventurer dans les profondeurs. Puis, il propose la sémantique structurale dans laquelle, de l'équivalence à la narrativité, surgit le concept de la valeur. Ensuite les passions offrent l'opportunité de s'imaginer l'origine du monde sensible. Dans toute son oeuvre, Greimas ne cache pas son intérêt pour la psychanalyse. Le dernier volet du livre reprend quelques thèmes apparentés à la psychanalyse pour montrer en quoi elle s'engage dans une direction opposée à la sémiotique. Greimas aspire à introduire de nouvelles axiologies pour contrecarrer l'insignifiance qui guette l'homme de la modernité. C'est l'enjeu anthropologique qui se dégage de sa méthode. Il se range ainsi dans l'épistémé de son époque, caractérisée par Paul Ricoeur avec les trois maîtres du soupçon: Marx, Nietzsche et Freud. Alors qu'ils ouvrent grand la porte à la déhiscence entre le sens et la conscience, Greimas, maître lui, de la fiducie, ouvre une porte étroite pour raccommoder sens et (con)science et réinstaurer la force adhésive de la croyance aux valeurs.
