Der antike Mythos der Kindermörderin Medea kann bereits auf den griechischen Tragödiendichter Euripides zurückgeführt werden und hat auch daraufhin im Laufe der Weltgeschichte seine tragende Bedeutung nicht einbüßen müssen. Von der antiken Fassung des Euripides von 431 vor Christus bis zur modernen "Manhattan Medea" von Dea Loher aus dem Jahre 1999 lässt sich der Bogen spannen und so die Aspekte der Aktualität und Modernität des Mythos nicht nur veranschaulichen, sondern auch bezeugen. Die Begrifflichkeit des Mythos lässt sich mehrdeutig definieren, wie man im Reallexikon der deutschen Literaturwissenschaft nachlesen kann, denn es ist einerseits eine "erzählende Darstellung von kollektiv bedeutsamen Orten und Figuren oder Naturphänomenen, in aller Regel mit religiöser und kultischer Dimension", aber es ist auch ein "Weltverhältnis, über dessen Eigenschaften [...] immer wieder neu spekuliert wird". Neuinszenierungen und Adaptionen des Mythos, sei es in Form von Roman, Lyrik oder Drama, hat es im Laufe der Geschichte zur Genüge gegeben, um eindeutig verbildlichen zu können, dass dieser Mythos aus der Antike eine zeitlose Relevanz hat und ein gegenwartsbezogenes Interesse aufzeigt. Die Aktualität des Mythos lässt sich anhand von Dea Lohers "Manhattan Medea" ausführlich begutachten und analysieren. Der Duden, das deutsche Universalwörterbuch, definiert die Begrifflichkeit der Aktualität als "Bedeutsamkeit für die unmittelbare Gegenwart, [als] Gegenwartsbezogenheit [oder] Zeitnähe".
