Se alegria houvesse, e festa se anunciasse para a celebrar, Zé era convocado por carta, para não contaminar contentamentos. Porém, sofre uma embolia que lhe retira a capacidade de sentir tristeza, ficando impossibilitado de ficar deprimido, perdendo competências em ser miserável. A sua irmã Alma da Encarnação, que teria muito para fazer nesta vida e noutras, quem sabe, que no nome para lá tinha atalho, é uma personagem secundária que, num inesperado jogo de perspetivas, desenvolve uma singular densidade arquitetónica. O protagonista, Zé da Paixão, experimenta várias profissões irrelacionáveis, numa vida que é conduzida pelo acaso, e vem a conhecer uma mulher por quem sente uma fixação inconsequente. Num exercício literário que ultrapassa as habituais técnicas narrativas, a autora faz o seu personagem central assumir a coragem de sobrepor a vontade à oportunidade, conduzindo-o pelas suas teias mentais, dando uso a recursos narrativos atípicos. E à medida que a leitura se faz deixamos de ter a certeza se se trata na verdade de uma história de amor. É uma escrita leve, mas com subtis sinais de seriedade embutidos num intuitivo e engenhoso sentido de humor. Rute Simões Ribeiro expõe uma narrativa nova, destacando-se dela própria e ilimitando-se numa escrita, uma vez mais, sem grilhos e sem condicionantes.
