About the Author: Dr. Nivedita Sahu received her Ph.D. degree on Marine Algal Biotechnology from the Dept. of Botany, University of Delhi in 2004 after her MSc (Algology) from Ranchi University. She has expertise in algal biology, cultivation, and algal polysaccharides. Her research area of interest is Applied Phycology and Industrial Microbiology and currently working as Principal Scientist at CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology in algae-based membrane integrated technology for water and wastewater treatment.
She has expertise in seaweed (marine algae) research also, which includes seaweed biology and its cultivation on the coast of Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and the Andaman Islands. She holds Associate Professor at AcSIR (Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research). At present, she is working on developing cost-effective membrane integrated processes and algal reactors to enhance treatment efficiency and improve % water recovery from domestic and industrial effluents.
To her credits, she has 01 Patent, 01 Book, 04 Book Chapters,10 prestigious awards and 25 research papers published in various journals. Research scholars and students of M.Sc/M.Tech projects s worked under her have fetched several awards in various national and international conferences and workshops. She is a Member of the Board of Studies at the Department of Microbiology, Osmania University, and St. Ann's College for Women, Hyderabad. As a part of her research work to collect samples, she has travelled extensively to different coastal areas of India.
Dr. S. Sridhar is a Chemical Engineer from College of Technology, Osmania University, Hyderabad, who has been working as a Scientist in the area of Membrane Separation Processes at the CSIR- IICT, Hyderabad for the past 24 years. He has developed several technologies for chemical industries besides contributing immensely to rural welfare through water purification projects and academic development via\extensive HRD and laboratory development in several schools and colleges.
Major highlights of his career include the commissioning of several membrane pilot plants based on Electrodialysis, Nanofiltration and Gas Permeation of capacities varying from 500-5000 L/h to facilitate solvent recovery, effluent treatment and gas purification in pharmaceutical, steel, textile and petrochemical industries, design and installation of 15 model defluoridation plants of 600-4000 L/h capacity and 25 highly compact low cost systems of 100-200 L/h capacity for purification of ground and surface water for more than 5 Million population affected by fluorosis, gastroenteritis, jaundice, typhoid and other water borne diseases in villages of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which is widely appreciated by the press, masses and His Excellency, The Governor of TS and AP, besides Union Ministers of Science & Technology. A free water camp based on a compact system design was established by Dr. Sridhar on Uppal Road in Hyderabad city and has been providing healthy water to the urban population, including pedestrians, drivers of buses, autos, cars, and two-wheelers, totally free of cost, since April 2016. Similar camps at the All India Industrial Exhibition in Jan-Feb, 2017 & 2018 and CSIR Science Exhibition have provided free drinking water to 1 million people, including school children. He has contributed to disaster management by installing hand pump operated hollow fiber membrane systems for the 10 lakh population in response to the recent floods in Kerala, Assam, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Bihar in 2018 and 2019. Another recent innovation includes a low-cost cascaded RO + Resin system for medical-grade water for dialysis and biochemical applications. More than half a lakh patients suffering from chronic kidney disease have been treated using this dialysis water in Nephroplus hospitals.
Dr. Sridhar has published 162 research papers in reputed international journals, which are widely cited by peers more than 9000 times in high-impact journals with an h-index of 47. He has 12 foreign patents to his credit besides 40 Book Chapters and 200 papers in various symposia/conference proceedings. Dr. Sridhar has trained 400 B.Tech./M.Tech & M.Sc. students from different universities and institutes for project work apart from guiding 8 scholars for Ph.D. Dr. Sridhar's students have been awarded 50 prizes for meritorious work and the best oral paper/poster presentation made under his guidance in various conferences/symposia.
Dr. Sridhar is an all-round sportsman who represented Hyderabad State and Osmania University Teams and captained All India CSIR Teams in Cricket, Lawn Tennis, and Table Tennis with distinction.
Dr. Sridhar is a recipient of more than 55 Prestigious Science Awards, including 27 National Awards and 3 State Awards, such as the IIChE Amar Dye-Chem Award 2003, CSIR Young Scientist Award 2007, Engineer of The Year Award from A.P.
