Der Sänger und Das Märchen von Fanferlieschen Schönefüßchen bilden die Eckpunkte dieser Studien zum Erzählwerk Clemens Brentanos (1778-1842). Die kryptographische Textur des frühen Erzählfragments und das Spätmärchen stehen in einem ästhetischen und werkinternen Zusammenhang, der über den Begriff der allegorischen Textur bestimmt wird. Die Entwicklungslinie bis zum Spätwerk wird durch die Auslegung der Bildsprache und Kombinationskunst im Märchen von dem Myrtenfräulein und den Mehreren Wehmüllern perspektiviert und im Kontext romantischer Ästhetik reflektiert. Die gründliche philologische Arbeit am Detail, die Kommentierung der Engführung autobiographischer, poetischer und religiöser Themen sowie der Hinweis auf Motivparallelen im Gesamtwerk machen die Komplexität von Brentanos artifiziellen Textstrukturen transparent.

Brentanos Märchen von Fanferlieschen erscheint als Kulminationspunkt einer kontinuierlichen Entwicklung und Exempel par exellence für das, was in der romantischen Ästhetik als Arabeskenkunst bezeichnet wird: allegorisch-stringente Bedeutsamkeit bei ästhetisch aufregender Raffinesse im Spiel mit Worten und Bildern. Der Nachweis von bisher kaum bemerkten politischen und religiösen Implikationen erlaubt zudem eine Präzisierung der Position des Dichters im Spannungsfeld von Revolution und Restauration.

Kontrapunktisch zu den allegorisch-arabesken Strukturzusammenhängen werden die hermeneutischen Implikationen in Brentanos Poetologie thematisiert. Auch hier stehen die behandelten Werke in einem internen Begründungszusammenhang. Die Verbindung von Hermeneutik und Allegorie ist über die Form der Allegorese gegeben. An zwei Beispielen, Brentanos Auslegung von Hölderlins Nacht und der Leichenpredigt im Märchen von Gockel, Hinkel und Gackeleia, wird das Deutungsmodell skizziert. Ausführungen zur Kunstkritik Brentanos, zum Gebrauch kunstlegitimierender mythischer Modelle und zur Opfer- und Märtyrervorstellung vom Dichter vervollständigen den Aufriß des Dichtungsverständnisses des Romantikers.
