About the Book
"Allen's Poetry Book III, The Later Years" is the third of three books collectively containing nearly 400 of Allen's poems as testament to his life-long love of composing. Books I and II were universally acclaimed by its readers: "[it read like] a poetic memoir"; "an amazing collection of poems of love, friendship, introspection, and philosophic ruminations." "[That Mobile Abode] was a modern-day version of the old wagon train trips across country ..." Book III covers the period from 2000 to 2014 and family residences in Vienna, VA. and Tucson, AZ. Allen's poetry encompasses: observations, occasions, travels, stories, politics, family and friends, philosophy, God, science, love, marriage, life, loss and death. It is matter-of-fact poetry using every-day words; however, Allen loves rhyme, rhythm, alliteration - especially in his tall tales. Book III's epics feature the last three Pa Poke episodes, Candelara Bound, Sydney Bay Bridge and Israel Memories. Book III also is graced with a Forward by Allen's grandson, Michael J. Cohen as well as 2 indexes that cover all three books: an Index of poems and an index of first names.
About the Author: The author, D. Allen Cohen, wrote his first published poem in 1944 at age 11 as an English assignment. Unbeknownst then to Allen, his teacher submitted it to an anthology of children's poems where it was accepted. As these three books and their 373 poems attest, Allen continued writing his poetic commentary, observations and stories for the next 70 years. Allen was born in Ohio in 1933, grew up living in Akron, OH, Cleveland, OH Jackson, MI, Lockport, NY and Pittsburg, PA prior to moving to Tucson, AZ at age 11. He married Phyllis Schwager in 1953, graduated the University of Arizona in 1955 majoring in physics and math, received his PhD in theoretical physics from Case Institute in Cleveland, OH while in the Air Force; served in the Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH and the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO. During this time his 4 children: Nicki, Mark, Lee and Dale had joined the family. After the Air Force, Allen worked in the Aerospace industry doing operations and systems analyses in the Los Angeles area, in Israel and in Northern Virginia. Allen and Phyllis currently live in Tucson, AZ pursuing their hobbies: traveling, painting, quilting (Phyllis), financial-planning analysis, wood working, hiking, healing, and, of course, writing poetry.
